Clariant to sell quats business to Global Amines

Clariant has agreed to sell its global quaternary ammonium compounds to Global Amines Company, its Singapore-based 50-50 joint venture with Wilmar, for $113 million. Subject to regulatory approval and standard closing conditions, this is expected to close in 1H 2023.

The business makes quats and esterquats under brand names including Praepagen and Genamin at sites in Germany, Brazil and Indonesia, all of which are part of the sale. These are supplied for use as preservatives, surfactants and antistatic agents, mainly in home care and personal care applications such as fabric softeners and hair conditioners.

For Global Amines, group general manager Ernesto Horikoshi said that the addition of this business “is an ideal fit … as it perfectly complements our product portfolio and our ability to offer customers the best and most competitive solutions from a complete range of amines, quats, amine derivatives and betaines. Clariant said that the sale continues its move to being a pure-play speciality chemicals firm.
