
Southern Ionics in sulfur expansion

Southern Ionics, a US producer of aluminium, sulfur and ammonium chemicals, is to invest an undisclosed amount to expand capacity, make infrastructure improvements and add sodium metabisulfite production at its site in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. President and COO Joe Stevens called this “a natural extension of our sulfur chemicals business
Sodium metabisulfite (Na2S2O5) is used as a preservative, antioxidant and reducing agent in applications including food and beverage, animal feed and pharmaceuticals, plus industrial processes such as photography, and textiles. There is currently insufficient manufacturing capacity in North America to meet demand.
