BASF’s Aroma Ingredients business unit has officially launched three newly built world-scale plants that are fully integrated into its verbund sites: two at Ludwigshafen making menthol and linalool and another for citral at the recently opened site at Zhanjiang.

The investment in Ludwigshafen is said to be in the triple-digit million-euro range. The citral plant in Zhanjiang will supply the local market and expanded downstream production, including menthol and linalool at Ludwigshafen. All have been producing commercially since Q1.

Menthol is a mint ingredient used in numerous products for oral and body care, flavour compounds for confectionary and in the pharmaceutical industry. Linalool is a lavender aroma ingredient widely used in a broad range of applications, most notably laundry care, but also in other home, personal care and fine fragrance applications.
