ACC criticises ‘regulatory overreach’

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) has launched an initiative called ‘Chemistry Creates, America Competes’. This comes in direct response to what it regards as the Biden administration’s ‘regulatory overreach’ and aims to help the administration and Congress understand the importance of ‘American Chemistry’.

Elementis in war of words with investor

Speciality chemicals company Elementis has come under pressure after an investor, Franklin Mutual Advisers, published an open letter to board chairman John O’Higgins, calling for it to put itself up for sale before its Q3 results on 31 October. Elementis has responded by saying it did not think this to be in shareholders’ best interests.

New investor for Glemark Life Sciences

Subject to regulatory approval, Glenmark Pharma has agreed to sell a 75% stake in its Glenmark Life Sciences (GLS) business unit to its India compatriot, Nirma. Nirma is a conglomerate which mainly makes detergents and cement but which also acquired sterile contact lens solutions maker Stericon Pharma in April. GLS is mainly active in the manufacture of APIs.

“Synergies between Glenmark Pharma and GLS the business have been rapidly disappearing and companies have had divergent pathways,” said chairman Glenn Saldanha.

Brenntag advances in personal care

Brenntag has announced an agreement to acquire independent speciality chemical distributor of Chemgrit Group of Johannesburg, South Africa, in a deal that is expected to close in Q4. Shortly afterwards, it also opened operations at two new innovation and application centres for personal care in France and the UK.

BASF in battery recycling deal

Under a new deal, BASF is to produce cathode active materials (CAMs) from recycled metals from its site at Battle Creek, Michigan, for use in Li-ion battery cells produced by Nanotech Energy, a US specialist in graphene-based energy storage products.  The two will also partner with American Battery Technology (ABTC), a Li-ion battery recycling company in Nevada, and Toda Advanced Materials, an Ontario firm which produces CAM precursors (pCAMs) and metal hydroxide material, to establish a battery value chain for the North American consumer electronics and automotive industries.

No biocide migration from leather: Study

A study by the independent Institute for Material Testing has confirmed an earlier report by the FILK Institute that biocides used in the preservation of leather intermediates do not migrate out of the finished leather articles, according to Lanxess, which commissioned it.
