Axplora consolidates UDCA manufacture

Axplora is to consolidate all manufacture of the bile acid ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) at its site in Vizag, India (pictured). This follows a decision to expand UDCA capacity there and create a fully integrated production platform from bile sourcing through to API manufacture. Production will transition from the site in Gropello Cairoli, Italy, by the end of 2026. 

UDCA is widely used as an API in drugs for chronic liver and gallbladder diseases. Demand is growing globally, driven by increasing diagnosis and treatment of chronic liver conditions and expanding healthcare access in emerging markets. Axplora manufactures UDCA at Vizag using aproprietary enzymatic synthesis route, reducing process steps and minimizing the use of solvents and reagents.
