Lanxess brings hydrogen burner online

Lanxess has brought online the hydrogen burner it installed at its Krefeld-Uerdingen site at the end of 2025. This will be used to power a spray dryer for used to dry iron oxide pigments. It will replace natural gas, reducing the company’s carbon footprint by about 6,000 tonnes/year. 

The hydrogen is produced during chlorine electrolysis at the neighbouring Covestro plant and piped directly to Lanxess. The two firms have a long-standing partnership at the site, in which Covestro supplies nitrobenzene to produce Lanxess’s iron oxide pigments and Lanxess returns the aniline by-product for use as a raw material for plastics production.
