Japan’s Nippon Shokubai will more than quintuple capacity for its Ionel brand of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) at Hunan Fluopont New Materials, its joint venture in China. This will take capacity at the site from 2,400 to 12,400 tonnes/year by the end of the 2027 financial year

LiFSI is a lithium salt used as an electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicle (EVs) and energy storage systems. The company said that demand in both markets is continuing to grow rapidly, with increased performance requirements for EVs like longer battery life, faster charging and improved output in low-temperature environments.
