Brenntag bid for Univar confirmed

Following reports by Bloomberg, it has been confirmed that Brenntag and Univar Solutions have held preliminary discussions regarding a potential acquisition. Neither company has commented further beyond stressing that discussions are at an early stage and there is no certainty of completion.

The deal, if completed, would be Brenntag’s largest ever and would bring together the world’s largest and second largest chemical distributors. Brenntag and Univar had sales of €14.4 billion and $9.5 billion respectively last year.

Univar works with Solvay in Brazil

Univar Solutions has reached an agreement to serve as Solvay’s first distribution partner for the agrochemical market in Brazil. This covers agrochemical defensives, adjuvants and fertilisers. It is the first time Solvay has named a distributor for this market in the country.

Major distributors in further portfolio moves

The world’s two largest speciality chemical distributors, Brenntag and Univar Solutions, have both concluded further acquisitions, disposals and deals in 2021. This follows on from numerous such advances by their rivals, Azelis and IMCD, in 2020.

Univar announces ‘Streamline 2022’

Univar Solutions, the world’s second largest chemical distributor, has announced its Streamline 2022 (S22) programme. This may lead to the sale of over $200 million in non-core assets and Univar will incur up to an incremental $50 million in charges in 2020 to implement it. The stated aims of S22 are to improve operational agility, drive faster sales growth, particularly in North America, reduce leverage to 3.0x by the end of 2021 and improve EBITDA margins to 9% by the end of 2022.

Univar to divest Nexeo Plastics

Univar has agreed to sell the plastics distribution of Nexeo Solutions to One Rock Capital Partners. This is expected to close within 1H 2019 and net cash proceeds of about $615 million will be used to pay down debt. Both boards have approved the transaction.
