A new 300L fermenter has been installed at FlexBIO, the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre’s (IBioIC) scale-up facility at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, UK, helped by a £847,000 grant from Scottish Enterprise, Scotland’s national economic development agency.
This increases upstream bioprocessing capacity at the site tenfold and will offer a bridge between lab-scale development and full-scale production, thus de-risking the work. It “will support early-stage companies to develop bio-based products at scale”, according to IBioIC, which was established in 2014 to stimulate growth of the industrial biotechnology in Scotland.
