Kemira has formed a partnership under which it will use the artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities of CuspAI to “accelerate the discovery and optimisation of new materials”. It hopes that material discovery timelines can be reduced from ten years to six months. This is a first in the water industry.

The initial focus will be on in silico development, while the first project will target the removal of per- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water. The company said that PFAS and other micropollutants in water “is increasingly relevant due to regulations around consumer and environmental health”. It is already addressing this by moving into the activated carbon market.

“The biggest global challenges, such as clean water, are fundamentally materials science problems and, as such, we see materials science as the next frontier for AI,” said CEO Antti Salminen. “Our collaboration with CuspAI will provide our teams with invaluable exposure to cutting-edge AI technologies. This will not only enhance our innovation capabilities but also support the development of our AI talent pipeline, ensuring we remain at the forefront of industry advancements.”
