Brenntag has officially inaugurated what it claims to be the first CO2-emission-free chemical distribution site in the world at Traun, Austria, following a full upgrade in energy-efficiency and a redesign of the entire energy system, saving about 120 tonnes/year. “The site is now considered a blueprint and global lighthouse project for Brenntag’s other around 600 sites in more than 70 countries worldwide,” the company said.

In all, Brenntag spent over €1.5 million to reduce energy consumption in through thermal building renovation and control optimisation of the heated acid and alkali tanks, converting the heating system to groundwater heat pumps and low-temperature radiators. It has also installed a photovoltaic system that will generate around 220,000 kWh/year of electricity.

Separately, Brenntag has acquired Czech firm mcePharma (pictured), which offers advanced sampling services and expertise in both OTC product development and GMP powder pack-off services to the pharmaceutical sector. Terms were not disclosed. This will add to Brenntag Pharma’s portfolio of services in the EMEA region.
