Vianode opens battery R&D centre

Battery materials maker Vianode has opened the Vianode Technology Centre (VTC) at Kristiansand, in Norway, where it had opened an industrial pilot plant in 2021. This came barely a month after the company announced an investment of €194 million in a battery materials plant at Herøya.

Solenis chooses home turf for R&D expansion

Aided by $4 million in state grant funds, Solenis is to move its R&D operations to Building 713 at Chestnut Run Innovation & Science Park (CRISP, pictured) in its home state of Delaware. This $40 million expansion comes “in response to increasing market demand for its sustainability-focused products and expertise and with an eye toward long-term growth”, the company said.

Dow to work with CAS

Dow has agreed a strategic collaboration with CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society. This will leverage a CAS Custom Services system based on specialised technologies, data science, and the CAS Content Collection “to empower efficiencies in Dow’s research processes that improves efficiency and productivity”, the company said.

Two invest in flame retardants in China

Clariant and Italmatch Chemicals have both announced investments in phosphorus-based flame retardants in China in the past two weeks as demand continues to grow from growth in the use of engineering plastics in the e-mobility, 5G communications, transportation, and electrical and electronic segments.

Evonik in TAA exit

Evonik has sold its TAA derivatives business to Italian chemical company Sabo, which claims to be one of the world's leading manufacturers of light stabilisers. Terms are not being disclosed and the sale is expected to close in early 2023. The sale is part of Evonik’s continuing strategy of focusing its portfolio on speciality chemicals and divesting businesses that no longer fit.

Expanding the chiral pool

A team led by Mark Walsh and Matthew Kitching from Durham University has published an article in JACS Au, detailing how they found nearly 1,800 conglomerate crystal structures within the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). These are molecules that are synthesised by racemic methods but which show spontaneously enriched chirality upon crystallisation.
