Merck KGaA acquires Biochrom

Cell culture media specialist rounds out Millipore portfolio

Merck KGaA has agreed to acquire Biochrom, a German specialist in cell-culture media and buffer solutions for pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical development. The deal, for which terms were not disclosed, should close within Q4, subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions. Biochrom employs about 60 people and had sales of €13 million in 2011.

Merck said that this would strengthen the Process Solutions business unit of Merck Millipore, which it will join. “Biochrom’s cell-culture media products are highly complementary and innovative, adding liquid cell-culture media and buffers including serum-free products and disposable packaging solutions to the existing portfolio,” it stated. Plans are to keep its operations in Berlin.
