The investment will ensure a reliable, high quality supply of nitrogen, oxygen and argon to manufacturing and engineering businesses across England and Wales, boosting production levels, and improving sustainability with energy efficiency and environmental performance while supporting the region’s growth.

Air Products – a world-leading Industrial Gases company in operation for over 75 years – has been based at Carrington since the 1960s. While the original plant is still performing well, the company took the strategic decision to upgrade the technology so that it can provide the product quality and reliability that the region’s industry will depend on in the future.

Air Products’ UK and Ireland Vice President Tim Hulbert explained, “We have a strong business in the UK, and a wealth of knowledge and infrastructure already in place. We want to build on this, and are investing heavily in our production facilities. The £30m upgrade at our Carrington plant forms an important part of a wider programme of strategic investment across the country that will ensure we remain agile and ready to respond to our customers’ growing and changing needs.”

The upgrade itself has been technically complex, involving the installation of a new, super-efficient cold box to manufacture liquid oxygen, nitrogen and argon from fresh air. The 55-metre structure contains a highly engineered distillation process that operates at around -186oC. It has been designed in the UK and manufactured by Air Products’ own engineers.

The existing plant remained operational throughout the 18-month upgrade, with new processes being installed onsite without unplanned interruptions while working to the agreed schedule and budget.

Air Products employs more than 50 specialists in Carrington. The site is also the base for plant managers, logistics specialists, engineers and operations staff who ensure that the plant is a highly reliable component of the company’s wider network that serves the UK and Ireland. The product is distributed from the plant to the customer by our driver team, also based at the site, who are highly trained to safely deliver the product into our customers’ site. Carrington has several European safety awards in recognition of its excellent performance.
